How to Make a Cardboard Box from Recycled Materials

Whether you have just moved house or ordered online goods, you would have an excess of cardboard lying around you. The use of cardboard boxes is found everywhere in the house, office, shops, and even in the garage. They are made out of the wood pulp and used for many purposes. 90% of the goods are supplied using cardboard packaging, so what can we do with all of them once the items have safely removed from the containers? Mostly we break them down and toss them for throwing away, but that can recycle them along with other materials to be used again to make a box. Here are the ways that can help you with it.

Cardboard boxes daily life

Recycling materials:

Recycling is the process of using the used things again to conserve energy. It had become a significant process going on in the industries to help the Earth to be regenerated. The materials that can be recycled and found in a large quantity are cardboard boxes for sale, newspapers, cereal crates, glass, plastic water bottles, and different kinds of paper, electronics, textiles, wood, rubber, and other that you can name. All of these materials can be recycled to make new things for use.

    3Rs; reduce, recycle and Reuse

The recycling process is already happing in nature as all the leaves, food leftovers, dead bodies, and other garden wastes are decomposed by the worms and other tiny earth creatures to give back the nutrient to the soil that can be reused or converted into the fertilizers. This way, the organic waste is reduced to become a heap of pollution, recycled and reused by nature.

    Creating cardboard from raw materials:

To make the box firstly, it is essential to understand the structure of the casing by having a look at one of the flaps on a cardboard container. You will notice that the internal and external walls of a typical box are made of the cardboard pieces called “liners.”  Sandwich between them is a wavy-looking piece of cardboard, and that is called fluted cardboard. It works by absorbing the impact and cushions, whatever you may place inside the box.

    Types of cardboard:

There mainly two types of wooden boxes; the first is known as the corrugated stock, and the other is a paperboard. The first one is used to make the shipping cartons, and it contains double and triple layers of the inner layers to make it thick and more durable for transportation. Whereas the second one is a single layer of grayish cardboard and lighter than the first one. This one can easily be torn and mainly used for the shoe boxes, cereal, and other packages.

    Collection:

Collect all sorts of custom cardboard boxes and different kinds of papers from your surroundings. Like if you are a company or an office, then collect all the containers of different shapes and sizes and place them at the safest place where they can be collected and transported to the recycling centre.

    Sorting out:

Once all the material reaches the recycling centre, the time comes to sort them out according to their type like earlier explained corrugated and paper board. The paper board is small in size and non-coated because it is mostly used for food packaging. The other one is coated because they have to withstand external factors such as weather, dust, and sunlight. One the sorting is done, they are then baled. This is done with the help of heavy machinery to compress all the recycling materials into compact bales that are easy to handle.

    Pulpy:

As the paper is made out of the plant-based fibres. Thus all the recycling materials contain those fibres which are turned into the pulp in the process called pulping. They are soaked into the water with a chemical that accelerates the pulping process. This is then mixed with the fresh pulp that is basically the wood chips. This is added to improve the quality of the paper; otherwise, a low-quality paper can be made from the recycled materials only. It will look dull and will easily wear and tear so to avoid these problems, fresh material is also added to it.

    Filter and de-inking:

Once the pulping is completed, the time comes to filter the mixture form any foreign objects. Glue and tape are removed using filters. If the pulp contains any color that can be removed by using the de-colourization chemicals.

    The last stage:

This is the finishing stage that demands to give the pulp the required shape. All the excess water and moisture are removed from the pulp using the conveyor belt or table. The material is dried by passing it through a dryer-type machine, and then it is ready to be given a final shape. This ready material is called linerboard, and it is ready to be used to make fresh boxes and other products.

    Advantage of using recycling materials:

    Green Environment:

Where to buy the cardboard boxes is not a big deal as you can see them all around you easily. Their recycling is very important as it helps to improve the environment. It decreases the ratio of cardboard waste in the landfills. Fewer trees would be cut down that are very essential for cleaning the atmosphere.

    Promoting the use of renewable materials:

Instead of using the hardwood trees that took around a hundred years to grow. The wood chips materials added in the mixture during pulping comes from pine and birch trees. These trees are easy and fast-growing in all sorts of conditions. Thus this means that we can manage and harvest these trees for more sustainability, therefore, promoting renewable materials.

    Saving the energy:

The professional companies are running after to save the environment and encourage eco-friendly packaging. As it takes a lot of natural energy resources to produce packaging products hence that can be tremendously reduced if we make them from recycling materials.
